The Karoo: 28/29th May 2023
Some years ago, I coined the word, or rather acronym GAFA. It meant, to be polite, the Great Australian Fanny Adams. You can use your own version if you like; the A can equally stand for 'African'!
That's what we saw over the last two days, on the long coach ride from Graaff Reinet to Franschhoek. Miles of rolling plains, with nothing to see but a solitary bushbuck and a couple of ostriches … or, bushes that looked like ostriches!
We left the plains to climb up to a mountain pass, from which we descended into Prince Albert, where we were to spend the night. The following morning, we set out the way we came, for a short visit to an ostrich farm. We've tried the meat, and liked it ... but I'd rather see ostriches in the wild, rather than tramping round in ostrich doo-doo.
After that, it was back on the bus. It had started to rain, which didn't improve matters; even when we climbed up into a mountain pass, and into cloud so thick that not much could be seen. Although, in the last few miles, the plain had given way to vineyards, for which the area is famous.
And, hopefully, we'll be trying some of the product tomorrow.
