Barnard Castle: 20th July 2021
This afternoon, we went to Barnard Castle, to visit ... the castle. It was mainly built around the end of the 12th Century, by one Bernard de Balliol, after whom the castle, and subsequently, the town is named. Local people call it 'Barney Castle', or sometimes just 'Barney'. From the Balliol family, it passed to the Nevil family, and eventually into the possession of King Richard III, as part of the dowry of Anne Nevil, his Queen.
After Richard's death at the Battle of Bosworth, the castle fell into ruins. Today, there's not much left of it but the merest shell, but, like all castles gives a super view of the surrounding countryside.
The town itself was rather crowded, so, after visiting the castle, we didn't stay. Maybe it was market day, or something; maybe there's more to see than the castle?
