In 2000, he and his mother moved from Guangzhou to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
In 2004, he and his mother went back to China. He attended Guangzhou No. 7 Middle School but shortly after, they moved back to Vancouver where he attended Point Grey Secondary School and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.
In 2008, he auditioned for the SM Entertainment in Vancouver. He passed the auditions and became a trainee for the company.
