Coach trips! You love them or you hate them, don't you? There are those who wouldn't travel any other way, and there's who would rather crawl there over broken glass. But, maybe that's being unfair. How many have based their judgement solely on one trip?

It's not really down to the itinerary, or the comfort of the coach. What can make or break a coach trip is your fellow passengers. An otherwise good trip may be spoiled by being seated next to a garrulous old lady, who insists on relating the history of her entire extended family. Or, you could be near a loudmouth with an opinion on everything. Or, someone with a fund of jokes which were old when the Dead Sea first called in sick. Or, 'Mrs, Complain About Everything to Anyone Who'll Listen'.

The upside is you can give thanks you're only going to Blackpool (or wherever) … you could be stuck with them all the way to Bavaria or the Italian Lakes.

On the other hand, you could be in a coach full of people who really get on with each other. No matter that the coach may have seen better days, or the accommodation is a bit this side of Heaven, you still have a good time.

Admittedly, even the best of trips aren't exactly hassle-free. There are stops, usually at those soulless motorway service areas.  They are necessary, for the drivers, by law, have to take breaks. And, often, it's necessary to meet another coach, for passengers to transfer to one that's going to their eventual destination. But, the coach tour does have the advantage that you don't have to drive … and, you can read, or even go to sleep during the boring bits,
