Police have been granted extra time to question Manchester United's Mason Greenwood after he was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday.

Accusations emerged on Sunday morning and police will keep Greenwood in custody to continue questioning him.

A statement read: "Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

"The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon and remains in custody.

"Enquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support."

Manchester United responded to Daily Star Sport on Sunday morning with a statement reading: "We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."

And the club since announced that Greenwood won't be taking part in training or matches for the foreseeable future.

"Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice."
