This painting was created by American artist Christopher Wool.
He investigates the effect of merging images, texts and patterns. His work contains enigmatic sentences, scribbles, paint stains and sometimes also screen-printed elements. He usually paints in black on a white background. Wool used aluminum as the background for this painting.
This gives a sleek, almost industrial-looking result and is light in weight at the same time. He used model building paint for the letters. This type of paint dries more slowly than acrylic paint and contains fine metal particles that give a smooth and shiny effect. The text on the work comes from the book Lipstick Traces by the music critic Greil Marcus. This text expresses a nihilistic view of reality, which denies that existence on earth has any value or meaning. Wool became known for his word paintings in the late 1980s. The museum preserves four other paintings, sixteen works on paper and a number of Parkett made by Wool.
