Britain used to be known as a nation of shopkeepers, of small businesses and independent industry. We have been the beating heart of the economy and were survivalists during the pandemic, the ones able to pivot, divert and keep the doors open whilst big stores crumbled. And despite many UK businesses still being in recovery, now that we're in the midst of a cost of living crisis, we are ones being asked to take the hit. Do not work for the Kudos!
It is insulting. It assumes rising bills don't affect small businesses. That, like new starters, we're expected to work for the 'likes', as if energy firms and supermarkets will take your kudos as payment at the till.
Some of you out there may feel obliged to follow the advice, better the numbers than nothing, right? WRONG!!!! It is creating a new race to the bottom. The Government wants the businesses it gave grants to in 2020 to keep them afloat, to work for less than they're worth. That is an unacceptable ask.
We can't dodge energy price rises, and we aren't immune from fuel costs at the pump or the rise in food prices. We are in the same position as consumers, except we have to add to our expenses list all the business expenses and to make things worse we don't have the reliability of a pay check every month. We are as hand to mouth as anyone.
So please don't follow this ridiculous advice. You are worth your rates.
