extremely unfortunate, now China wins and China thinks that the USA will 'do nothing' if they occupy the island, just like Ukraine, what follows AFTER the occupation, the rest of South East Asia? Because no country in the region can compete with China . It all reminds me of the Nazi occupation of the Rhineland in 1936 that was not dealt with, which was explained as "we can do more now" with no consequences. Very bad thing @annozijlstra
The schedule for the Asia trip of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, is missing Taiwan.
Earlier, there was talk that Pelosi might visit Taiwan. In a telephone conversation, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his American counterpart Joe Biden not to "play with fire". A visit from Pelosi would be a token of American support for Taiwan. China opposes independence from Taiwan and Xi opposes any outside interference in the matter.
Pelosi and five other Congressmen will visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan in the coming days. They are leaving today and will talk about security, economic cooperation and the climate crisis, her office reports. There is no mention of Taiwan, which is in the East China Sea.
Independent or apostate? Taiwan was part of China. The split started in 1949 during the civil war, when the Communist Party came to power on the mainland. The nationalist government of the Republic of China established itself on the island.
Under the latter name, Taiwan considers itself independent, with its own constitution, elections and passports, but Beijing sees it as a renegade province. Only about fifteen countries recognize Taiwan as a country. They have no official relations with China.
The US has no official diplomatic ties with Taiwan, but is required by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself due to the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979.
