Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri Imo state Nigeria is set to upgrade their student's Hostel through a group patnership with a notable construction company for immediate commencement of work.
It is on this that Multiplex Engineering and Construction Company, has pledged to partner with the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, in the construction of students' hostel facilities.
The group made this known when its representative, Mr. Gideon Simeon Gharjiga, paid a courtesy call on the Rector, Engr. Dr. Michael Arimanwa FNSE, JP, recently.
FEDPONEK GAZETTE made it known to our correspodent that Mr. Gharjiga revealed that his company was ready to equip the hostels after completion to make them comfortable for students, adding that they were ready to deploy a new technology in building construction using special bricks that are durable and cost effective.
The use of bricks, according to Mr. Gharjiga, would require no plastering, screeding and painting. He also pointed out that the bricks would make the interiors of the hostels cozy, irrespective of extreme weather conditions. The construction of the hostels, according to the group, would be categorized according to the gender and levels of students. Thus, there would be distinctions between male and female hostels; OND and HND students.
Responding, the smart Rector thanked the group for identifying with the needs of the polytechnic in the area of student accommodation. He also expressed joy that such a capital intensive infrastructure was going coming on board at a time it is most needed.
According to the polytechnic chief, "It is our desire to connect this institution for global visibility. We have built viable linkages with a group in Canada, Togo, Ukraine, and other places of the world. It is our desire to have this project and we are happy you are bringing these opportunities to us.
"More than 80% of our student population live outside the campus. I know it is easier to organize students once they reside within better than when they are outside. I am happy with the proposal. We intend to draft a Memorandum of Understanding so that the agreements could be formalized."
The hostel project, when approved for construction, would be on the basis of build, operate and transfer; within which the investors would recover their funds. The group also expressed interest to intervene in other areas of need such as the construction of a guest house, shopping mall and international conference centre.
In another development, a group, United States Latino American Chamber of Commerce (USLACC) has expressed interest to partner the polytechnic in the construction of a smart city.
The group disclosed this to the Rector when its executive, Amb. Ifeoma Ejiogu, paid him a courtesy visit. The smart city according to the group would have all necessary facilities that would make it a destination of choice.
Speaking further, Amb. Ejiogu disclosed that "the successful implementation of the smart city project with the polytechnic would attract economic development to the Southeast."
Responding, the Rector expressed joy that the smart city project was being considered for Federal Polytechnic Nekede. He disclosed that when necessary approvals are obtained, the polytechnic would offer a good space for the project. He likened the smart city project to his smart campus project which is also technologically driven, expressing hope that the project would unlock the economic potentials of the Southeast.
The consortiums on hostel construction and smart city project were successfully attracted to the polytechnic by the Directorate of Linkages and Innovations of the polytechnic led by Dr. A.C. Madu.
