This Episode

Dalziel and Pascoe investigate when the skeleton of missing miner Billy Farr is found in a mineshaft in the Yorkshire coalfields, four years after his disappearance. At the time, a seven-year-old girl was murdered, and initially, a serial killer who confessed to killing five other girls was suspected. However, she was good friends with Farr, and due to the fact they both went missing on the same day, certain townsfolk believed he was somehow responsible. His son, Colin, fails to cope with the discovery well, and leans on his college lecturer for guidance - who happens to be none other than Ellie. Torn between staying loyal to her husband and supporting her student, Ellie helps Colin to do a runner when a second body is found down the mines - this time that of mining boss Heppelthwaite. Discovering the motive for Billy's killing, Pascoe races to catch the suspect - but Colin manages to find him first.

The Series

Dalziel and Pascoe is a British television crime drama based on the mystery novels of the same name, written by Reginald Hill. The series was first broadcast on 16 March 1996, with Warren Clarke being cast as Dalziel (pronounced "dee-ell", /diːˈɛl/ (listen)) and Colin Buchanan being cast as Pascoe. The series is primarily set in the fictional town of Wetherton[1] in Yorkshire, and "follows the work of two detectives who are thrown together as partners. Complete opposites. Different backgrounds, different beliefs, different styles. They get on each other's nerves. They are continually embarrassed by each other. But their differences make them a stunningly brilliant crime-solving team."[2]

The series was produced by BBC Birmingham, and broadcast on BBC One until 22 June 2007, running for a total of eleven series. The first three series, comprising eleven episodes, were entirely based on Hill's novels, as were the first two episodes of series four. However, all subsequent stories, with the exception of "Dialogues of the Dead", are stories written exclusively for television, and have not appeared as subsequent novels. The series was axed in 2008, citing falling viewing figures as the main reason. It was one of a number of dramas axed in a mass cull by newly appointed station controller Peter Fincham.
