I lost my job at the publishing house the week before Thanksgiving in 2004. Within a week I was taking in freelance work from my many contacts in the publishing world. By February I was pretty sure I never wanted to work in the corporate world again.*
I'd learned a lot about the value of good ergonomics while working in publishing, and I knew I needed a good desk chair. I bought a Herman Miller Aeron chair because I figured there was a reason the publishing company provided the Aeron to all the vice presidents (99 percent of them men, of course). Back in early 2005 I paid $1100 for it.
It looks like it's double that now, eighteen years later. Worth it.
* So much backbiting and nastiness! Someday I'll write all that up, but here's the quick version: I make more money out-of-house than I ever did in-house; I have more vacation time, I don't have to dress up, I don't have to be nice to people I have no respect for, and I like my boss. 'Nuff said.
