After years of drought, we have a deluge in California. And we're recording our highest snowfall ever. The seasons are totally off, and it is still cold in April! (we're usually into early summer by now)
We're thankful for the water of course, after years of drought. Uvas Canyon, a nearby park, has waterfalls everywhere.
And it was an unusual and quite lovely surprise to see all the hills around us capped with snow last month.
But stormy weather with winds over 30+ mph meant lots of damage all over the state. The stone lead to landslides breached levees and power cuts statewide. I don't know anyone who didn't have trees and fences that collapsed.
This gigantic tree near my home came down across a busy street. I've passed this stand of eucalyptus trees every day for more than 16 years.
And I've thought countless times of drawing the trees. But I've never gotten to it. Now, one of those mighty trees is gone.
When you live here in California, it's hard to understand how there is still a debate about whether climate change is real. This piece tries to explain what is happening and what we might expect next.
