This morning I saw a bird I've never seen before! (And yet the Audubon field guide says they are "Widespread and common, with numbers stable or possibly increasing. Forests, woodlots, groves, shade trees.")
I wasn't quick enough to snap a photo (he was climbing head-first down the tree), but I took a picture with my eyes and went straight to my manual field guide. And it wasn't hard to find the white-breasted nuthatch, because it's quite striking.
