Balancing the Books – April 2023

May 2

May is here. A month of bank holidays, brilliant books due to be published and apparently there's something going on in London involving crowns and swords and suchlike.  The days are getting longer and if you look carefully, there may be signs that the weather is improving. Though here in the UK that's never a guarantee. Now I didn't think many books had arrived this month, as some had gone missing in transit. Then four of the same book arrived at once. And some others. Put it this way, I've been very lucky and can't complain. Except about the lack of reading time.  Though I did do something I've not done in a long time. I bought a book and read it immediately. It's easy to forget the joy of choosing books in a bookshop, getting home and deciding which one to read first. Hopefully this month I'll have a bit more reading time as there's a holiday looming as well as all of those bank holidays.

Here's what came to live with us this month:

  1. Cleaner by Brandi Wells, sent for review by Headline.
  2. The Silent Child by M R White, a treat to myself.
  3. A Killer in the Family by Gytha Lodge, sent for review by Michael Joseph.
  4. Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld, a double points purchase from Waterstones.
  5. Always You by Caroline Khoury, sent for review by Penguin.
  6. Things I Wish I Told My Mother by Susan Patterson, Susa DiLallo and James Patterson, sent for review by Century.
  7. The Interpreter by Brooke Robinson, sent for review by Harvill Secker.
  8. The Botanist by M W Craven
  9. Beach Read by Emily Henry. Both of these were bought.
  10. The Last Dance by Mark Billingham, sent for review by Laura Sherlock and Sphere.
  11. London in Black by Jack Lutz, sent for review by Pushkin Vertigo.
  12. From Now Until Forever by Rowan Coleman, sent for review by Hodder & Stoughton.
  13. Swordcatcher by Cassandra Clare, sent for review by Tor.
  14. Unladylike Lessons in Love by Amita Murray, sent for review by Amita.
  15. Western Lane by Chetna Maroo, sent for review by Picador.
  16. Lowbridge by Lucy Campbell, sent for review by Ultimo Press.
  17. Tell Me How This Ends by Jo Leevers, sent for review by Jo.
  18. The Girl in the Eagle's Talons by Karin Smirnoff, translated by Sarah Death, sent for review by Maclehose.
  19. The Second Lady Silverwood by Emma Orchard, sent for review by Allison and Busby.
  20. The Murderous Type by Sue Minix, sent for review by Avon.
  21. Book Lovers by Emily Henry. Another treat from me to me.

Here's what I read:

  1. The Three Dahlias by Katy Watson.
  2. Found in a Bookshop by Stephanie Butland.
  3. Date With Death by Julia Chapman.
  4. Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld.
  5. Persuasion by Jane Austen.
  6. Termush by Sven Holm, translated by Sylvia Clayton.
  7. Mrs Porter Calling by A J Pearce.

I also gave one book away and returned three of the same book. So that's 21 in and 11 out. Not balanced but you can't win them all.

I hope you enjoyed whatever you read this month and have a lovely May.

Happy reading!
