French is the official language in Wallis and Futuna, which separated from New Caledonia on July 29, 1961. On March 28, 2003, Wallis and Futuna became a French overseas collectivity.
Hervé Jonathan, 61, assumed office as the administrator superior of Wallis and Futuna on January 11, 2021. On March 25, 2022, Munipoese Muliʻakaʻaka, 47, became the president of the territorial assembly.
