Alice Feeney is the author of His and Hers, Rock Paper Scissors, I Know Who You Are, Sometimes I Lie and Daisy Darker. Her latest novel, Good Bad Girl, was published by Pan Macmillan on 6 August 2023.
Alice kindly answered a few of my questions.
1. Tell us a little about Good Bad Girl.
Good Bad Girl is a story about four women, three suspects, two murders, and one victim. It takes place on Mother's Day, but I wrote it for daughters. I'm excited for readers to meet the characters and try to solve the mystery that connects them.
2. What inspired the book?
Relationships between mothers and daughters are complex and unique. Whether good, or bad, it is a relationship that cannot fail to shape us. I've always had a cast of strong women in my life, and this was a story I knew I had to write.
3. Are you a plan, plan, plan writer or do you sit down and see where the words take you?
I'm a planner and I always think about the story for a long time before I write a word. There is no right or wrong way to write, but for me, starting a novel without a plan would be like going on a long and unfamiliar walk with the dog without a map – I'd spend the entire time worrying about getting lost instead of enjoying the journey.
4. Is there anything about the process of publishing a book that still surprises you?
Every day! Every book is different, and so the publishing journey is different each and every time. I feel very lucky to be working with some of the best people in the business.
5. What do you do when you aren't writing? What do you do to relax and get away from it all?
Ha! I'm always writing. I like going for long walks with my dog and I like to swim. I tend to think about the story I'm working on, have ideas, and daydream while doing both of those things. I'm almost always thinking about my books, but I have the best job in the world so that's okay!
6. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life which book would it be?
I couldn't do that.
7. I like to end my Q&As with the same question so here we go. During all the Q&As and interviews you've done what question have you not been asked that you wish had been asked – and what's the answer?
That's a great question! I meet a lot of people who think you need a lot of things to write, and I don't think that's true. Anyone can write if you have the patience and passion to do so. So this would be my question and answer, and I hope it might inspire some aspiring authors out there.
Q: What essentials do you need in order to write?
A: My laptop, my dog, bed socks, Kit Kats, and quiet.
About the Book
Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things...
Twenty years after a baby is stolen from her push-chair, a woman is murdered in a care home. The two crimes are somehow linked, and a good bad girl may be the key to discovering the truth.
Edith may have been tricked into a nursing home, but at eighty-years-young, she's planning her escape. Patience works there, cleaning up mess and bonding with Edith, a kindred spirit. But Patience is lying to Edith about almost everything.
Edith's own daughter, Clio, won't speak to her. And someone new is about to knock on Clio's door . . . and their intentions aren't good.
With every reason to distrust each other, the women must solve a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might just find out what happened to the baby who disappeared, the mother who lost her, and the connections that bind them.
