This passage contains some of Isaiah's most remembered words: "For a child is born to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Just those two sentences alone make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. For one, it's a baby announcement.
Who doesn't love a new baby? And two, they speak of a great hope by which we in present day are enveloped. But also, even in English, these words are just magical to read. This whole chapter is magical, actually. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Isaiah can whittle the words like no other. I had to highlight verse 5 because … well, wow … just look at it. Who's brain thinks like this??? "The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire." It's gruesome, I know, but the picture it paints is
