Yesterday we went to the Cannes Film Festival advertisements show at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
One of the ads we saw last night was for the Alzheimer's Society of Great Britain and it deeply resonated with me perhaps because I know a married couple around the same age as my husband and I in a similar position to Laura and Adam in the advertisement.

It also made me think of a course I led this spring at the Winnipeg Art Gallery for people with dementia and their caregivers. As is the case in the film most couples in my class were women caring for a partner with dementia.
The film does a brilliant job in just one minute and forty-five seconds of showing us the toll a dementia diagnosis can take on a marriage, and making it clear why couples who are living with that reality need help and encouragement.
As we are given a glimpse into what Laura's life is like dealing with Adam's dementia we also hear her repeating her wedding vows from many years ago before, the marriage vows she made to stand by Adam in sickness and in health.
The film makes it clear however just what a daunting task that will be and how the support Laura receives from the Alzheimer's Society makes a difference as she tries to keep her marriage vows.
Watch the video below.

The advertisement was a good reminder to me about the need for friends and family to regularly show empathy and care in tangible ways to couples living with the reality of dementia.
It also reminded me of why the work of organizations like the Alzheimer's Society is important. I can contribute financially as one way to show my support.
