The Whisper House by C S Green, the second DC Rose Gifford novel, was published by Harper Collins on 16 March 2023.
Caroline kindly answered a few of my questions.
1. Tell us a little about The Whisper House.
It's the second book in a series about a young policewoman called DC Rose Gifford, who works for a division of the Metropolitan Police that investigates 'uncharted' crimes. In other words, ones that can't really be explained in the real world. In this book, which can be read as a standalone, they are called to investigate a highly volatile neighbour dispute that may involve something much more sinister.
2. What inspired the book?
I love books about haunted houses basically, and really wanted to write one! The house in this book felt so real to me, I could actually smell it in my imagination.
3. Do you plan before you start writing or do you sit down and see where the words take you?
I can't plan like some people do – deciding the whole plot before they write. But I do need to know roughly where I'm going. I do a fair bit of working out events before I sit down properly to begin.
4. Is there anything about the process of publishing a book that surprised you?
Well, I think most people outside the business imagine it's all down to the strength of a book, whether it is a big success or not. I know I used to think that! Nowadays I understand how important marketing can be in order to reach readers.
5. What do you do when you aren't writing? What do you do to relax and get away from it all?
I have a very bouncy dog and take him on loads of walks, usually listening to music and podcasts. I also read a lot. It's almost a bit of an obsession!
6. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life which book would it be?
That's easy! The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Anyone who knows me has heard me bang on about this book many times!
7. I like to end my Q&As with the same question so here we go. During all the Q&As and interviews you've done what question have you not been asked that you wish had been asked – and what's the answer?
Gosh, that's a really hard one! I guess it might be this: Why should anyone care about fiction, really? My answer is that storytelling is incredibly important to us as individuals and societies too. It's how we make sense of our experiences, how we can walk in other people's shoes, and how we can process major events. And on top of that, there is nothing wrong with simply being entertained!
About the Book
A house with a history. A boy with a grudge. And a detective who will stop at nothing to get to the truth.
Gregory knows something is wrong with his house. His parents don't believe him, but he can feel it – and he's frightened.
DC Rose Gifford is called out after neighbours report a series of disturbances at the property, and she can feel it too. She knows Gregory and his family are in danger, and she knows that it will be down to her specialist supernatural crimes team to uncover the truth.
Something terrible happened at number 42 Wyndham Terrace. And it's Rose's job to find out what.
