When we were younger we made regular twenty-four-hour road trips to southern Ontario to see my husband Dave's family. I learned early on that once my husband got into a car he was a 'driven' man. He needed to reach our destination as quickly as possible.
Now that we are older he likes to say things before we leave on a road trip like.....
"We will take our time."
"We won't drive too far every day."
"If we see something interesting we will stop."
"If the weather is bad we will wait it out."
But none of that happens. He can't help himself. Once we are in the car headed to our destination he's a driven man. He sets goals for himself about where how far we will drive each day and it's very, very, very hard for him to change his mind.
Take yesterday. We are on a road trip to California. Dave determined we would drive from Williston North Dakota to Idaho Falls Idaho.
The sun came up after we'd been on the road for a while yesterday
We were on the road before the sun was up and we drove till after the sun went down.
We did not take our time. Although I managed to get Dave to quickly stop to pick up lunch.
We drove for eleven hours and covered nearly 700 miles.
We passed The Little Big Horn Battlefield which I figured would be interesting to see. Dave said he thought he'd seen it once before and kept driving.
The road conditions when we drove through the mountains were horrible but Dave had heard a storm was coming the next day so we soldiered on despite passing numerous hotels where we could have stayed.
We drove well past sunset yesterday
I am not really complaining. I know how INCREDIBLY lucky I am to have a partner who is an excellent driver, is happy to do all the driving and leaves me to read, work on a writing project or listen to an audiobook with him as we travel.
It isn't always so bad to be married to a 'driven' man.
