It looked, briefly, as if we might enjoy a sunny day for the 1st of the New Year.
The Sun tried hard but was thwarted.
Oh well.
.
"What did you do to that sparrow?"
" I wished Happy New Year!"
"and it levitated."
.
"Please excuse my friends."
"The boys are a wee bit loud."
.
"We're not really a bad lot!"
"Well just try not to upset my girls!"
.
Where are the red cardinals?
Usually they are here year round.
As are the blue-jays and even they were gone for a long period last summer.
What will this year bring?
.
"Green snow?"
Juncos are snowbirds!
It is strange to see these black and white birds on grass. His pal there is a chickadee.
.
How sweet is the tiny titmouse?
.
Scooter greeted the New Year.
At least came to find a snack.
What an amazing little creature she is.
.
She climbed up to the porch so we got a closer look. at her crippled back legs.
She dragged herself up three steps.
.
How did she survive such an injury in the first place?
Groundhogs can be quite vicious to one another, but somehow Scooter was able to feed herself.
She can actually move quite fast, but would have been a handy target for an eagle or a large hawk, even a fox.
We think she came out of hibernation because she had not managed to store enough body fat to get her through the winter months.
.
Since we saw she was about, we've been placing fruit and peanuts by her burrow and I throw a few nuts into the tunnel, but of course other creatures will eat them if they get there first.
Today Scooter was hungry and must have smelled the nuts which were up on the porch.
She crossed the grass quickly and in moments she was up the steps and tucking in.
.
After a drink and a second helping, Scooter was back out in search of fresh bedding.
First she had to pull some dead grass down from around the sumac bush.
.
.
Then she had to carry it to her tunnel.
.
A challenge to get her mouth around it.
.
Once she did, she scurried off
back down her burrow.
.
As I finished this, a strange sensation caused me to raise my eyes.
