I occasionally look at the stats on my blog and recently saw some interest in a painting I posted a while ago with the same title. Pulling up the image I instantly recalled my attempt at capturing the feeling of a detatched individual beset in a flurry of activity.
Now, a few years down the line, I look at the image slightly differently. Getting older I feel a dislocation from the mainstream - that life is moving on and leaving me behind. I am not too distressed by this, as I dont miss the breathless imperative to keep up with the latest fashion or gadget. I've gone through too many to care and now worry that subsequent generations will see change come at an even faster pace.
In the earlier painting I had the sharply focussed central character standing in a defiant pose, surrounded by the crowd in soft focus. Now, I felt a more vulnerable figure would sum up this present mindset. They are still detatched but looking out, expectant and isolated.
With that, I'll wish you a happy new year.
