To complete the challenge I have read the books for the final two categories.
If any one has read any of the books would love to hear opinions ❤️ 👂 . Especially of Lost in the book shop as my Book Cllub has now picked it for end of February discussion. All I put below was it was whimsical and nor looking back I thinknot particularly memorable; so I need to gather some deeper thoughts / opinions of it!
Latest update:
A book with a unit of measurment in the title
I read Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty. Yard is an old English imperial measurement of length.
This has been a tv series but I have not watched. The way the book is structured you know the characters end up in court but you are kept guessing for a long time what has happened. The book has backdrops of the legal world / court and also Westminster and the scandals that happen there! It was an intriguing read.
A book with a punctuation mark in the title
I found a book with two types of punctuation marks in; a hyphen and hash tags. The book is Confessions of a 40 - something f##k up.
The quote from the telegraph is 'The new Bridget Jones' and it definately is akin to Bridgette Jones but, for the next stage in life to first Bridgette Jones where I imagine she was in 20s or 30s. The 40 something protagonist is unmarried, without children and at the start of the book between houses and jobs therefore has feelings of failure when comparing self to others of a similar age. As this book is a 40 something year old her peer group are past the coupling up stage, not only married but with children covering spectrum from newborn to teenagers. Some are on the verge of divorce. The book also see's the protagonist make friends with a widowed childless 80 year old. So the book is all about who we compare ourselves to others thinking their lives are better rather than just different.
The book covers a year in the 40 something's year. The ending is perhapas cliched in my opinion.
Previously read
A book set in the 1930s
The Orphan house by Ann Bennett. The story was focussed on the events of 1930 in England and India albeit with a present narrative star and also.
The A book set in a school (wholly or partly)
The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas. It is about the deaths of 5 cheerleaders in a short space of time and whether they are linked. Of course US school; I get a little co fused about seniors, freshmen's, home coming etc! But an engaging read to find out what happened.
A book with a county in the title
Adventures of a Yorkshire Shepherdess which is written by the shepherdess herself Amanda Owen. Amanda's story has also been followed on tv. This book took her from 6 to 9 kids via way of lots of animal stories.
Here is what I have read so far:
A book with a game or sport in the title
Ahead of the Game by JD Kirk. A police investigation into a murder. It was ok to read, but not bothered about reading any more from the series.
The victim was a teacher and involved other teachers, students and even a lollipop man so it could have counted for set in a school!
A book connected with nature
Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. It fits nature category because nature really affects the character's life's because set in Alaska where in winter the conditions are harsh and all year round the pattern of life follows natures cycles. In particular the Snow child spends a lot of time outside, surrounded and interacting with nature.
A book that is second in a series
The Girl who saved Christmas which is the second in Matt Haigh's Christmas triology (aimed at children).
A book with the title 'The' plus one word
The Curfew by TM Logan. Found in a charity shop.
A book with a flower or plant on the cover
This book was quite literally a gift for this category!
It was a Christmas gift and it fits the bill three times over!
1. There are plants in the inside of the steps pictured on the cover.
2. There are ivy leaves on the cover.
3. The author's name on the book is Rose 🌹 Although this is actually a pen name of Caroline England.
The book is a twisty thriller so much enjoyed.
A book with a bird in the title
Magpie by Elizabeth Day. Had its good points but I think Cuckoo would have been a better title. It was thought provoking in that I thought of things I would change as discussed I in the following post which contains spoilers.
Magpie spoilers
A book with a shop in the title
The lost book shop by Evie Wood. A whimsical book.
