Much politicking and much wrangling on Capitol Hill and red flag warnings over Mogadishu this February 27, 1995.
The GOP-majority Congress led by Newt Gingrich has said they will pass this entire legislation in the first 100 days of the 104th Congress. About two weeks remain until that deadline and the majority of amendments have passed with more still being debated Contract With America comprises 10 proposed acts dealing with various aspects of recent congressional debate.
One of the big arguments House Republicans make for their "Contract With America" and for its eventual acceptance by a balky Senate and president is that polls show Americans want it not always well informed about public policy and not sure what they want from their government. President Clinton has often been criticized for letting polls weigh too heavily in his policy decisions. His ill-fated health care reform plan clearly demonstrated the hazards of misreading what people tell pollsters.
Rival Somalian clans battled with mortars, grenades and machine guns outside the main gate of the Mogadishu airport Sunday as UN peacekeepers prepared to withdraw from Somalia. At least one person was killed during the fighting, witnesses said. U.S. military officials said it was the biggest firefight in the Somalian capital this month. Some fear it could foretell bloodier struggles for control of the airport and seaport once the peacekeepers depart. All was not calm in Mogadishu this day.
More than 2,000 U.S. marines and Italian soldiers are expected to sweep aShore this week to secure part of Mogadishu's port and airport facilities. They will form a rear guard to extract 2,400 Pakistani and Bangladeshi peacekeepers and military hardware.
And Bill Clinton will sign an executive-order today giving the government "more, power to help track down federal workers who fail to pay child support", the White House said Sunday. More than 100,000 federal workers now owe child support. White House spokeswoman Ginny Terzano said. She said the order Clinton would sign in the Oval Office today would step up enforcement of existing laws. The order would clear the way for legal papers to be served to federal employees and establish an Office of Personnel Management-Health and Human Services Department task force to monitor the effort, Terzano said.
And that's just a little of what happened, this February 27, 1995 as reported by The CBS World News Roundup.
