I consider myself a creative person. But I've never had a creative head for Halloween costumes. Never had the imagination for it. Not for myself, not for Jesse, I'm sorry to say. I just wasn't good at it. I had a T-shirt that read "This IS my costume." I still have it.
Today my massage therapist was dressed up as a pirate. She was lovely! I have friends who love this "holiday" in varying degrees, and I love seeing their photos on social media—but all of them are better at dress-up than me.
It wasn't always thus.
I was probably 3 or 4 here; I believe it was taken here in Murfreesboro. Costume was made by Mom out of a sheet and scraps—and I still think it's cool. Do note the lipstick and fingernails.
That's me at the head of the table there, and I think I probably concocted that "ballerina" costume from things hanging around the house (I'd taken ballet lessons the year before). The dangling red earrings, on the other hand—I have no idea. They weren't my mom's; she didn't wear jewelry.
Seriously, these are pretty much the last photos I have of my participation in Halloween. I'm pretty sure I gave up on it not long after that. Was it the "you're the oldest" thing? I had to escort Jill and Jon around. Was it that I was trying too hard to grow up, to be cool? I don't know. As an adult, I did enjoy opening the door and chatting up the kids, though.
And fast forward to grandmotherhood …
Sybil's mother is a Halloween aficionado. The sort who dresses a five-month-old for the event. And I love it.
Needless to say, like mother, like daughter. This is a bat cape (you can tell when the arms are spread wide). And I love this too.
