As you've no doubt read elsewhere, we had a relationship that waited for marriage (in October of 2014) until Gerry was in sight of his retirement. Then we started our "immigration adventure," the first step of which was completed fully a year later when we threw a party in Dublin, took a long honeymoon, and then returned to the States together in late October 2015.
A few days ago, I stumbled upon something I'd said on social media on October 30th that year:
Today we dropped by the Social Security office to see if Gerry's Social Security number was "in the system." We'd been told by the gentleman in the Dublin Airport who reviewed his brand-spanking-new visa for the first time that Gerry would be assigned a number as a part of his visa application (which was approved by the US Consulate in Dublin last month and is what allowed him to enter the US).
The gentleman at the Social Security office insisted it was not in the system, not pending, and that in his twelve years with Social Security, he had never seen a number assigned without the applicant present in a Social Security office. "Homeland Security and Social Security are two different things," he said, "and they don't work together."
I didn't laugh that day in the office—he was serious, and we did go on to get Gerry a number—but there is clearly a tension there, yes? Still, I think it's hilarious.
That said, we're both grateful for both branches and types of the security we have. Happy anniversary, honey!
