Today is Earth Day a day set aside to remember how important it is to protect creation and all the living things that are a part of it. Here are a ten experiences I've had that remind me of that.
Seeing leopards up close in Tanzania and learning why they are an endangered species because of hunting and habitat loss.
Kissing an owl at a nature preserve I visited in Croatia that rehabilitates and saves wounded and endangered birds of prey.
Doing a beach clean up in Sai Kung with my Hong Kong students
Working on a tree planting project in Borneo to prevent soil erosion and restore wildlife habitats.
Seeing the faces of the child victims of the nuclear disaster in the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev Ukraine
Visiting Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland and realizing how important our country's national park system is to the protection of the environment.
Spotting the rare quetzal bird in Costa Rica. The quetzal is a threatened species due to the destruction of its habitat.
Discovering the Cranberry Flats Conservation Area which is part of the Meewasin Trail along the South Saskatchewan River. The trail has received recognition around the world because of the joint efforts of different groups to conserve some 6,700 hectares of the river valley which is home to more than 300 plant species, 150 kinds of birds and a myriad of insects, amphibians, reptiles and other animals.
Visiting the controversial Three Gorges Dam in China. While it's construction has greatly reduced China's dependence on coal it has also caused landslides and earthquakes, destroyed many natural features of the landscape, displaced over a million people and flooded countless rare architectural and archaeological sites.
Visiting a penguin sanctuary at Stoney Point in South Africa and learning what conservation authorities are doing to protect the birds.
