State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told a news briefing that Campbell's meeting was part of intensive diplomacy in the past year to responsibly manage competition in U.S.-China relationship and the U.S. expected more such senior-level engagement. Ma stressed that Washington should "earnestly respect China's sovereignty, security and development interests", Xie wrote.
