The year is already half over and I am nearing the halfway mark of my goal to read 98 books in 2024. This is my 12th year doing the Goodreads challenge and it's probably my best mid-year showing. I am also working on the Bookish Books Challenge, hosted by Susan at blogginboutbooks.com, and my own Crossing Continents Challenge.
I seem to be reading more historical fiction lately than I normally do and so I was very pleased to discover the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge hosted by Marg at The Intrepid Reader & Baker. So far this year, I have finished six in the genre and just started another. I have also read an additional four non-fiction history books which this challenge does allow but I think I will just count the novels.
There are several different reading levels for this challenge:
- 20th Century Reader - 2 books
- Victorian Reader - 5 books
- Renaissance Reader - 10 books
- Medieval - 15 books
- Ancient History - 25 books
- Prehistoric - 50+ books
Any sub-genre of historical fiction is accepted (Historical Romance, Historical Mystery, Historical Fantasy, Young Adult, History/Non-Fiction, etc.). Seeing this list made me wonder if there are any good Historical Sci-Fi novels out there and that led me to a few lists including one at Book Riot. I think I am going to add The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal onto my ever-growing pile.
At any rate, I am going to add a section for the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge on my 2024 Reading Challenges Page to list what I have already read. I have written a review for only one of these -- The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, read in January and it is still my favorite book read this year. I really need to write more reviews and it is my hope that participating in this new challenge will inspire me to do just that.
