As often happens, one of my recent blog pieces generated much criticism. All of these are welcome if they remain on an intellectual basis rather than merely argumentative or personally insulting.
The piece, entitled The Somnambulists Among Us. (link here), attempts to explain the failure of the word "woke" to mean something negative.
One reply on the Facebook link asked me the following.
Please list the lies, and idiotic conspiracy theories, and misunderstanding of science and civics these brain-dead individuals you are referring to. How many genders are there and what is the science that you are referring to so I might be able to understand what science your arguments are based upon?
My first response was that such questions could never be answered meaningfully in a Facebook post. But, I gladly accepted the challenge of addressing the issue in a blog piece. That's the problem in the country today. Many (but not the author of this particular response) get their "in-depth" analysis from social media. This is like believing the position of stars at the moment of one's birth controls life's trajectory.
Horoscopes are entertaining but hardly a sound basis for life decisions. Social media is like entertainment.
But I digress. I'll break down the request for the basis of my article into the various questions raised, not in any order.
Here's the first one.
How many genders are there and what is the science that you are referring to so I might be able to understand what science your arguments are based upon?
Concisely, there are two physical genders, but this is only one component. There is the psychological aspect that is equally determinative and can be different than the apparent physical expression.
"Gender dysphoria (previously gender identity disorder), according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, is defined as a "marked incongruence between their experienced or expressed gender and the one they were assigned at birth." People who experience this turmoil cannot correlate to their gender ..."
There is also the rare but well-documented condition of hermaphroditism, individuals with both male and female reproductive organs. Affected individuals have sex chromosomes showing male-female mosaicism (where one possesses both the male XY and female XX chromosome pairs). The condition is rare but can occur in 0.5 percent of births. (https://www.britannica.com/science/mosaicism)
The issue with the "controversy" over being transgender lies more in the misunderstanding of the extent to which psychological conflicts of gender, internal and not readily evident to others, have an equally significant impact on identity as physical presentations.
Genuinely conflicted individuals, assigned a gender identity at birth that is different than their psychological sexual orientation, are not "making this up" as part of some popular trend.
Political actions that ignore the realities of the situation through ignorance, indifference, or some hyper-religious morality are dangerous and destructive. When someone says "it's all in their heads" as if it is less impactful than physical conditions, they demonstrate their lack of understanding.
I would encourage those who do not understand the condition or believe it to be the invention of a "woke" philosophy to invest some of the time you might spend reading social media posts or horoscopes and read them.
And the next question was,
Please list the lies, and idiotic conspiracy theories, and misunderstanding of science and civics these brain-dead individuals you are referring to.
Where to start?
First, let's try to define QAnon.
Their core belief is that a cabal of Satanic, cannibalistic child molesters is operating a global child sex trafficking ring that conspired against President Donald Trump. QAnon has direct roots in Pizzagate, an Internet conspiracy theory that appeared one year earlier but also incorporates elements of many other theories. QAnon has been described as a cult. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QAnon)
"Pizzagate" is a conspiracy theory that went viral during the 2016 United States presidential election cycle, falsely claiming that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) had discovered a pedophilia ring linked to members of the Democratic Party while searching through Anthony Weiner's emails. It has been extensively discredited by various organizations, including the Washington, D.C. police. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizzagate_conspiracy_theory)
I had to use Wikipedia because I couldn't stop laughing as I tried to define it myself.
There are a considerable number of people in this country who vote AND believe this to be true.
If this doesn't qualify as lunacy and illustrative of my point, nothing will. But I will move on.
The biggest and most dangerous belief in a lie, that the election of 2020 was rigged and stolen, is particularly troubling. I defy anyone to produce one verifiable piece of evidence that the election was compromised in such a way as to alter the legitimate outcome.
Remember, under our electoral college process, it can come down to just a few thousand votes, which can change an election. Yet there is no evidence of any such event.
To this day, no challenge to the election's results has persevered in court. Not one verifiable bit of evidence was produced by anyone.
Which, of course, means one of two things. The election was legitimate or, and here we drift back into that magical nonsense of conspiracy theory, the entire election process was compromised by Democrats who, after the nefarious scheme was revealed, exerted total control over every court in the nation to ensure the failure of any legal challenge.
Once again, a sizable number of people believe the latter over the former. Cue the sound of the cuckoo. They fully believe in the existence of this conspiracy and ignore the reality of our form of government in justice.
Everyone gets their day in court, but they must prove their case. Absent proof, they fail. This is basic civics.
There is evidence that one side, aware that just a few thousand votes could change the outcome, say eleven thousand, tried to persuade an election official to violate the law and commit fraud. That case is pending.
Since it is impossible to prove a negative, I dispense with a list of court cases that verify this point. But I will include the list of court cases that prove election fraud. (LINKS NOT FOUND BECAUSE THERE ARE NONE)
To fully understand this lie about the election, I would suggest reading Ken Block's book, Disproven: My Unbiased Search for Voter Fraud for the Trump Campaign, the Data that Shows Why He Lost, and How We Can Improve Our Elections. (Link to Amazon)
The book is a comprehensive data review demonstrating that the election was not tainted. Ken Block is not a partisan Democrat. On the contrary, he is a staunch Republican Conservative now characterized by the very people who hired him as a RINO, Republican in Name Only.
Those enamored of Mr. Trump can only be a Trump Uber Republican Disciple to be considered legitimate. Aren't acronyms great?
And the last point concerns the origination of Covid Sars 19, the Wuhan Lab, and Vaccines.
The linked article is not exciting reading; science by design rarely is, but it references other studies and examines the phenomenon's origin and best science analysis. The problem is such language isn't as exciting as "Fauci did it."
But the danger of such contentions that ignore reality can do serious harm. Same with the contention of some inherent high risks from the vaccines. All the peer-reviewed studies indicate that vaccines related to COVID-19 are safe.
This does not mean they have no risk; every medication carries risk. To put it in perspective, every year there are deaths caused by aspirin in some compromised individuals. (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1803955)
I don't hear a demand for removing aspirin or claims that big pharma knows aspirin to be deadly but keep selling it for the profits. Or maybe it was Fauci again?
