September 28. A day for checking out ancient ruins near Sligo, and then onto Westport, the best small 'Tidy Town' in Ireland where we spent the night.
After a fabulous continental breakfast in our B&B we headed off to the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, one of the four major passage tomb complexes in Ireland.
The previous day we had been scrambling around the Carrowkeel Megalithic Cemetery without having a clue what we were looking at, but our landlady assured us that visiting the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery would answer all the questions about these 'passage' tombs.
There were large piles of stones called cairns.A stone circle. A dolman surrounded by a circle of stones. This one had been excavated to reveal the tomb lying at its centre.Description of finds in one of the burials in the museum at Carrowmore Megalithic Tombs. The surrounding area was lush farmland and the speculation is that drew these Megalithic farmers to the area 5600 years ago. A small section of the Lonely Planet map showing our route coming into Sligo from Ireland UK. We found a B&B and booked into it, followed this with a drive to Carrowkeel Megalithic Cemetery. That evening we wandered around Sligo.
