By all accounts, it was inches before America would be 100% involved in the War in Europe - Germany warned the U.S. that every ship carrying contraband for Britain will be sunk and charged that the United States is employing the Robin Moor sinking to build up war psychosis propaganda. Nazi propagandists made that comment today upon the official revelation in Washington that the American freighter was sunk by a German submarine. The Robin Moor crisis arose as Allied columns closed in slowly upon the two chief cities of Syria, Beirut and Damascus. News of the fall of Damascu was expected in London, with Free French forces reported in the suburbs of the ancient city. London replied to a Vichy protest over the invasion of Syria with a suggestion that Vichy order its troops in Syria to cease resistance.
The British noted with approval a French statement that Vichy would avoid action which might aggravate or spread the Anglo-French conflict.
The Royal Air Force carried out what was described in London as the heaviest attack of the war on the German Ruhr-Rhine area last night. The German high command admitted that the raid was heavy and that many fires had been started which apparently forced all German fire-fighting forces in the area into action. The attack was carried out over the same heavily Industrialized region which was raided by the RAF last night.
And ten Axis warplanes were reported shot down into the sea around this British Mediterranean island base of Malta today by Royal air force fighter pilots The defense planes lashed back with unusual success at Axis raiders which have killed 295 civilians and dangerously injured 310 in the last twelve months of incessant bombing. The Axis planes had again blasted the city—where 2341 houses have been demolished in a year—in the night and then renewed their attack in the morning. Accurate anti-aircraft fire broke up the raiders formations the British said scattering the planes across the sky and making them ideal single targets for the fighter pilots.
And aside from the ongoing story of Malta that's a little of what went on, this June 13, 1941 as reported by NBC's News Of The World.
