This morning for a change, I declined the offer of a "quick excursion" and I just know the man will come back and tell me he saw new born fawns or some other creature I would love to see!
Because it's on those quick trips that we often have the nicest experiences.
.
Take last Thursday for example: a quick outing to the village and back.
Does this look like the village?
.
We intended to collect the mail and top up the petrol/gas tank but somehow we found ourselves heading off...elsewhere.
A moody sky will have that effect. Everything looks more interesting in such light.
.
We passed a big barn where resident cats hang out in the doorway.
This day, there was a large cat sitting on the seat of a tractor. It would have been a great photograph, but passing in a car even at low speed, we spotted it just as we sailed by.
.
Then, for no particular reason at all we turned onto Eagleville Road and soon realised we'd not investigated it before.
Eagleville Road leads to a covered bridge, but just before we reached it we noticed a small path going down to the river.
.
When there is access to a river, we have to explore and wouldn't you know, it was at this precise moment that my camera battery ran out.
A moan of exasperation from the excursion leader.
Shooting out the door so suddenly,"to the village and back", I'd grabbed only the camera.
How was I to know I'd need a back-up!
.
Never mind!
Time to activate the iPhone.
To be honest, the only reason I wanted an iPhone was to have it as a back-up camera.
.
Also for photographing flowers.
Creeping Jenny, apparently.
I had some in my previous garden but I didn't recognise the flowers.
Here it was growing wild.
.
Golden Alexander is in the carrot family.
"It can be used in soups and salads."
But better yet, it attracts pollinators.
Maybe I'll try growing it in our garden next spring.
My efforts this year have attracted beetles to devastating effect.
And the wallflowers have been re-discovered by the groundhogs.
.
The Batten Kill River is very shallow here and this is a great place for swimming.
We should have come here to keep cool during the heatwave! I could happily sit in it reading a book.
.
Or perhaps I'd park myself right here and let the cool water flow over me. Though I suspect the rocks are slippery, so it might not be a sensible thing to do.
Camping in Sudan wasn't too sensible either, but I was young then and the experience, while not exactly enjoyable, was certainly worthwhile.
These days I need to be a little more selective of my adventures.
Such as learning to become more proficient with posting video clips!
.
Here the water was even more shallow. I think you could easily wade to the other side.
.
The video clip I posted a couple of days ago has mysteriously vanished and all my attempts to re-instate it have failed.
It's so great when the system works and so frustrating when it does not!
Grant is very keen on videos clips and they certainly have their merit, but I am not good at capturing them and it seems I am rubbish at posting them.
My recent success now a failure.
It's all magic and I am no magician!
.
Because I'm so pig-headed, I don't give up easily, but there is only so much time even I am prepared to spend on the frustration of technology.
So I abandoned it and deleted the post which had the vanished video clip.
Grrr. Meanwhile....where we parked by the river there was a lovely view over the fields.
.
The river in this image, could be lots of places more exotic if you added a jungle sound track.
Upstate New York sounds are nice too.
.
Eagleville covered bridge is very narrow but you can drive through...
.
.
How is it that we've lived here nearly six years and never came this way before!
It will be nice to see it in different seasons.
.
Coming off the bridge, we went left which took us to a dead end so we followed the road the other way until something familiar came into view.
.
We didn't exactly have bags of time available, but before long we discovered we were almost home!
.
A quick lunch and we were back out.
.
Not wanting to leave my camera in the car while we were both elsewhere, I was still employing the iPhone to capture the rather nice clouds.
.
So that was Thursday.
Having refused today's outing, I hoped to catch up, but then I discovered the missing video clip...
Will the one attached above also turn into an empty black box?
