If I could remove social media from my business strategy I probably would. But in 2024, and although social media is proving itself to have negligible benefits to small home businesses, it is still a thing in the world. But it just doesn't work in the same way it used to.
I have watched three comforting and inspiring videos on Youtube this past week, about the problem with social media and some of the possible solutions. The first is from Art by Louise, the second is from Beechtree Handmade and the third is from SXSW - Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web with Jack Conte.
And I also recently posted re my feelings about TikTok shops and why this is never going to happen for me:
I think a lot of the problem and the solution is finding something which aligns with you. I don't think of YouTube as a social media site and that's because I enjoy it. But I also know that many places do think of it as a social media platform. It's just not like Instagram or TikTok (thankfully). It offers a meatier, more authentic experience - at least in my mind.
And that's because I can very clearly pick and choose what I want to watch, who I want to follow, and my feed doesn't get bunged up with channels I have no interest in. It also doesn't try to force me to take notice of things I don't want to add to my online life.
So for now, YouTube is going to remain my platform of choice. I have already seen improvements and it has given me the motivation to keep trying. It's no easy task. You can't fight algorithms and a platform's desire for profits, but I can give it a go, in my own small way.
