Did you know that most people actually get happier as they age? In an article in The Atlantic writer Arthur Brooks claims that research shows our mood improves, we become kinder, are less anxious, have more self-esteem and are less jealous as we grow old.
Brooks says as we age our brains remember more positive than negative information so we don't get as upset about negative stuff going on in the world and our lives. Research shows that because our life experience has taught us negative emotions don't last forever, we tend to ignore bad moods or shut them down more quickly.
Celebrating getting older with my Dad
As we get older we become less jealous of people who are more educated, more attractive and have a higher social standing than we do. We've learned that those things aren't as important as we once thought they were.
Our self-esteem grows as we age and so does our agreeableness. Most people actually try harder to conscientiously be kind and caring, having learned the value of those things over their lifetimes.

So if we follow the natural trends we can expect to be nicer, happier and less worried as we age.
Isn't that happy news?
