A mouse has made its home in our fifth-floor condo! Despite setting traps in several spots, we have been unable to catch it.
It's bold!
On Friday night, we had supper guests at the table in our dining room and that mouse scampered right to the middle of the adjoining living room checking out the rug for bits of food. My husband Dave had vacuumed just before our guests arrived so the creature was out of luck. But the mouse boldly stood looking at us enjoying our dinner. It didn't seem a bit scared!
On Sunday after our supper, the mouse brazenly scampered up onto the kitchen counter to nibble at an errant noodle on the rim of the sink and then dashed down the side of our fridge. We moved the fridge. The creature wasn't behind it but we spotted a hole we thought it might have chewed into our baseboard.
Later we noticed it had nibbled away at a plastic bag in a basket near our toaster and had begun snacking on one of the bread slices inside.
We've talked to our building superintendent who says while mice have been reported in condos on lower floors, our mouse on the fifth floor is the highest sighting yet. Building management has hired a pest control company to deal with the problem but so far their efforts and ours haven't been successful.
I'm not terribly worried about the mouse. We once lived in rural Arizona for a year and went to sleep with the sound of mice scurrying about in the walls of our bedroom. In one of our apartments in Hong Kong, we had mice and even rat guests, and mice were frequent visitors to our family cabin at Moose Lake when I was growing up.
Despite these past experiences and knowing mice are basically harmless, sharing a house with one is not something I'm delighted about. The silver lining is that it has made us much more diligent about putting food away immediately and making sure our kitchen is spotless.
Last night, Dave was so upset when the bold mouse was dancing around on our kitchen counters completely avoiding the two traps smeared with peanut butter he had set on either side of the sink, that he went and got some cleanser and meticulously wiped down all the counters again.
I just hope the mouse we have been seeing is the same one each time and hasn't started a family in our condo.
We have a mouse in our house. But I hope it's the only one!
