I was reading an article in The Atlantic about group photos and it inspired me to look back at some group photos I have in my collection and find interesting details in them.
We stayed at this very unique lodge in Tanzania run by a couple from Manitoba who provide employment to some fifty local people. Some employees happily invite you to spend a day in their homes learning what life is like for them. Here is a shot of our group with the amazing family that hosted us.
The detail that stands out for me is the two little brothers in front. The older one is holding the younger one and they are looking with such love and happiness into each other's eyes.
This is a photo of my Mom (on the left) with her siblings on their farmyard in Drake Saskatchewan in the late 1920s.
The interesting detail for me here is how one of the farm cats decided to get into the photo as well. I'm also wondering about those big tires my uncle is holding. What kind of vehicle were they for? Was he using them as toys to play with and roll around?
In this photo of cousins at a wedding in our family, the detail I noticed is that my daughter-in-law on the far right is on her tiptoes, perhaps to bring herself up to the shoulder height of the cousin beside her.
This photo was taken on the rooftop of the school I taught at in Hong Kong. These were my advisory students, a group of kids I shepherded through their four high school years as a mentor.
The detail I noticed is that despite the fact my students are all dressed in school uniforms they have each managed to put together a unique look, whether with their jewellery, their hairstyle, the length of their pants, their choice of styles and colours of the school uniform or their shoe choice.
This photo was taken on a hike in Portugal in 2018. Dave and I are with our friend Rudy. The detail I noticed here was the brace on my right arm. I broke my wrist shortly before we left to spend a couple of months in Portugal and although my cast came off just before we left Canada I had to wear this brace for most of our holiday.
I found this exercise of looking for unique details I might have missed in group photographs an enjoyable and interesting exercise. It inspired me to examine other group photos in my collection and find things I might have failed to notice.
