Lens-Artists Challenge #305 – Two Rectangles

"Every one sees the world differently. Through their own lens. I'm lucky that mine happens to be attached to a camera."

Tim Mantoani

This week Egidio has given us quite a challenge! My world happens to be extremely busy at the moment, such that I nearly skipped the blog this week but I just couldn't do it 😊. My husband and I spent the last 2 weeks in New Jersey and New York so this week's post features some of the unusual and "oh-so-different from my normal world" images of NYC. My opening image features more rectangles than one can count and hopefully meets Egidio's wonderful explanation of the topic. So too my second image below of NYC's skyline - rectangles galore!

"A 35mm picture is just a rectangle and everybody has the same space to work with, but what you can invent and come up with within that space is how you develop."

Joel Meyerowitz

My husband and I took advantage of the NYC High Line while we were in town. It's an amazing wonderland of nature built on former train tracks above the city which gives one an entirely different perspective. The next three images are from that walk, which includes magnificent views in every direction as well as art and a microcosm of New Yorkers (and out-of-towners) enjoying a beautiful day.

"Street photography is the art of gleaning what is at hand — subjects, lights, shapes — to create beautifully composed and arresting images."

Pauline Vermare

"What I like most about photography is the moment that you can't anticipate: you have to be constantly watching for it, ready to welcome the unexpected."

"It's possible to think of photography as an act of editing, a matter of where you put your rectangle pull it out or take it away."

Michael Kenna

I promise there will be more high line images in future posts but for now let's go to the walk I take along the river whenever we visit the city. The vistas across the water are wonderful, including a view of Lady Liberty and the cruise ships which often visit.

"Photography is like a river with a thousand streams that never converge."

Massimo Vitali

I'll close with one final image. Those who have visited the 911 Monument will recognize it as one of the Memorial Pools. The image was captured from our room on the 49th floor of the Millennium Hotel. It caught my attention because there was no water flowing and there were workers standing on the floor of the pool. Not the usual memorial image! Fortunately there are two identical pools so for visitors who had not been to the site previously, the second pool was flowing as usual while this one was being cleaned.

"When I Iook at the city from my point of view, I see New York City as a great big sculpture."

Louise Nevelson

As I looked through my images of NYC I was reminded of the old tale of the Country Mouse and the City Mouse. There was a time I was the latter but I've long since become the former! That said it's always nice to visit such an amazing city.

Sincere thanks to Egidio for explaining a concept I'd not heard of with his wonderful examples. We look forward to your responses. Please remember to link your responses to Egidio's original and to use the Lens-Artists Tag to appear in our reader section. Thanks also to Ritva for last week's Backgrounds challenge. Your responses proved beautifully that what's behind the subject can be just as important as what's in it. Finally, as those who follow her know by now, Lens-Artists team member Donna of Wind Kisses is taking a break from blogging for personal reasons. She will be very much missed but hopefully will be with us again before too long. We wish Donna and her family only the best as our thoughts are with all of them.

I hope you'll join me right here next Saturday at noon EST as I lead our next challenge. Until then as always please stay safe, be kind and enjoy the adventure.
