The narrative was posted by a hoax website that has previously posted falsehoods about high-profile political detainments. Posts on X and Facebook falsely said Thomas-Greenfield had been detained, with screenshots of a headline posted on social media that says: "Marines Arrest U.S. Ambassador to U.N. For Treason — Wanted 'Blue Helmet' 'Peacekeeping Force' to Monitor 2024 Presidential Election." The headline was published by the website Real Raw News on June 17 and says Thomas-Greenfield was detained by Marines for treason, citing unnamed sources in the Marine Corps. (https://neuters.de/fact-check/us-envoy-un-was-not-arrested-treason-2024-06-21/) Thomas-Greenfield was not detained, however. The ambassador spoke to the U.N. in New York on June 18, the day after the Real Raw News article was published. Reuters did not find any credible report on such an arrest, nor is the ambassador's name listed in the Navy and Marine Corps court filings. A U.S. Department of State spokesperson did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, nor did the U.S. Marine Corps. The Real Raw News website includes a disclaimer that its content includes "humor, parody, and satire" but later adds that this description is "for our protection," on the advice of "legal counsel." The site's "About Us" page includes a section criticizing fact-checking organizations. Real Raw News did not respond to a request for comment. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
